Periodontics

Cosmetic and family dentist in Shreveport, LA

Gum (periodontal) disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults, but it doesn’t usually receive as much attention as tooth decay. Fortunately, we can screen for periodontal disease early – and help you avoid problems like:

  • Gum recession (“long teeth”)
  • Tooth mobility
  • Bone loss
  • Halitosis
  • Heavy tartar buildup
  • Gums that are bleeding, sensitive, and swollen

At your new patient exam or checkup, Dr. Pary or one of our hygienists will carefully measure the areas around each tooth, to see how deep the “pocket” of gum tissue is on each side. Pockets that are deeper than 3mm indicate some type of tissue detachment or disease.

The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis. Mild irritation or redness is usually reversed in just two weeks of dedicated brushing or flossing. If it isn’t, then chances are that you have periodontitis.

The Treatment Process

When gum disease is present, we will recommend a series of scaling and root planing appointments (“deep cleanings”). Typically, Dr. Pary prefers that you come back 4 to 6 weeks later for a follow up, and then a maintenance cleaning every 3 to 4 months. Once everything has stabilized and no more disease symptoms are present, we will usually put you back on a 6-month recall schedule.

In some cases, it may be necessary to place antibiotics under the gumlines to combat severe infections. Dr. Pary will carefully monitor the response to treatment through clinical evaluations as well as digital x-rays.

Don’t Risk It

Did you know that the bacteria that causes gum disease can be passed by sharing eating utensils, or even kissing someone? If you have gum disease, you owe it to your loved ones to get the situation under control. Call our Shreveport dentist office today to find out how we can help!
